Subject: Regarding the Disconnection of Electricity Supply Without Prior Notice.
Respected Sir/Madam,
On the evening of March 23, 2026, the Rural Electricity Department of Sri Ganganagar instructed me to clear my outstanding electricity bill by March 31. I assured them that I would settle the payment before the stipulated deadline of March 31, 2026. However, on the very next morning—March 24, 2026—the department's chief officer, acting in a dictatorial manner, ordered the disconnection of our household's electricity supply. This action was taken despite the fact that nine days still remained until the March 31 deadline, and I had already explicitly informed their employees of my intention to clear the outstanding dues before that date. Under these circumstances, how was I expected to arrange the necessary funds late at night?
Furthermore, for the past six months, my husband, Mr. Lakhvir Ram, has been suffering from severe bouts of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)—a condition exacerbated by extreme stress and anxiety—which has resulted in the loss of his private-sector job. Consequently, I am currently struggling immensely to provide for my children's upbringing and to cover the costs of my husband's medical treatment. In fact, when the department previously demanded that I deposit more than half of the outstanding amount, I went so far as to sell some of my personal jewelry to settle a significant portion of the bill.
Given these circumstances, why did the Rural Electricity Department of Sri Ganganagar proceed to disconnect my power supply, especially when their employees were fully aware of the situation? Their staff merely stated that they were acting under the orders of their "senior dictatorial officer," who had issued a directive: "Either recover the outstanding dues immediately, or disconnect the power supply."
Such actions constitute an illegal act. The electricity supply does not belong to the department as their private property; rather, we are residents of this state, we exercise our right to vote, and we pay taxes to the government on every commodity we purchase.
Therefore, the department's arbitrary decision to disconnect our electricity supply—without providing adequate time or issuing the mandatory 15-day prior notice—is unlawful. We strongly condemn this conduct and request that appropriate disciplinary action be taken against the Electricity Department to ensure that no other law-abiding citizen is subjected to such public humiliation in the future.
We also humbly request that you grant us a grace period of at least six months, as I am currently facing extreme financial hardship in managing my household expenses while simultaneously providing for my children and covering my husband's medical treatment. Furthermore, my electricity connection should be restored at my residence as soon as possible, within two days.
Sincerely,
Applicant:
