What happened

  1. Purchase. My wife bought the scooter from Ola in December 2022 and paid for it in full. Ola's own invoices (AP11026341, AP11026360, AP11026356) and the insurance policy schedule all show the hypothecation in favour of Kotak Mahindra Prime Ltd.
  2. Wrong RC entry. The Registration Certificate shows IDFC First Bank Ltd as financier. We never took any loan or hypothecation from IDFC First Bank. The vehicle was financed only through Kotak. The wrong entry appears to have arisen during the registration process handled by Ola at the time of sale, and we never requested it.
  3. Loan closed. The Kotak loan was fully repaid and closed in December 2024. The deductions ran monthly from January 2023 to December 2024, and I have Kotak's closure proof. For about 21 months after that, Ola never raised any NOC issue.
  4. The lock. On 03.09.2026, in the evening, the scooter was remotely locked with no SMS, app alert or call. A working woman and her 5-year-old child were using it at the time and were left stranded. Afterwards she had stress and blood-pressure fluctuations, saw a doctor and took a day's leave. Records are available.
  5. Runaround. We raised three tickets. The scooter will not shift from Park to Drive. Ola customer care says the showroom is responsible, and the showroom says the company is responsible. I visited the Rajahmundry showroom twice. On the first visit I was told it was closed even though people were inside. On the second, the staff knew nothing and asked me to wait for a manager. The showroom says vehicles are unlocked only once an NOC is shown.
  6. NOC not possible. Kotak's banking team says that because the RC shows IDFC as financier, they cannot issue an NOC to Ola. They can only give loan statements, and they need a clarification letter from Ola about the RC entry. Ola has not given one. It wants a document from a bank that cannot legally issue it, because of Ola's own registration error.
  7. Shifting reasons. Customer care attributed the lock to the PM E-DRIVE scheme. That scheme started in October 2024. My scooter was sold and registered in 2022 with a FAME-II subsidy already deducted on the invoice (₹44,700). Ola has not shown any provision in either scheme that allows locking an already sold vehicle. It has also not shown any request from a bank or financier, or any contract clause it relies on.
  8. Notices ignored. My email of 11.09.2026 gave 24 hours to respond, with no reply. On 19.09.2026 I sent a Final Demand & Pre-Litigation Notice, also handed over at the showroom, with a 48-hour deadline. [UPDATE HERE: no response as of 29.09.2026 / or describe any reply.] Ola has not acknowledged the complaint within 48 hours as required under Rule 4(5) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, to the extent they apply.

What I am asking for

  • Immediate unlocking, with full functionality including Park-to-Drive shifting, at no cost.
  • The exact reason for the lock, who applied it, and the legal or contract basis, in writing. If no bank or financier requested it, confirm that in writing.
  • A written clarification or undertaking from Ola to Kotak and to the RTO to correct the IDFC entry in the RC.
  • Written resolution of all three tickets, and one named senior officer accountable for the case.
  • Provide extended warranty for battery because we are unable to charge scooty.
  • Compensation of ₹50,000 for loss of use since 03.09.2026, travel, harassment and the medical consultation, plus ₹2,000 for each further day the vehicle stays locked. This is without prejudice to my right to claim more, including punitive damages.

Legal basis: deficiency in service and unfair trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (Sections 2(11), 2(47), 38 and 39); Section 14 of the Sale of Goods Act, 1930 (quiet possession, goods free of undisclosed charges); Section 51 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (hypothecation entries on the RC); and Section 73 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872.

Evidence I hold: RC copy showing the IDFC entry; Ola invoices and insurance schedule showing Kotak; Kotak deduction statements for 2023–2025 and closure proof; my email to Kotak; WhatsApp messages showing the NOC demand and Kotak's reply; app screenshots; ticket screenshots; voice recordings; both notices; and the doctor's and leave records.

Next steps if Ola does not act: a legal notice through an advocate, a complaint before the District Consumer Commission through e-Daakhil, complaints to the National Consumer Helpline and the CCPA, and a request to the RTO to correct the RC entry.
