I am writing to lodge a complaint against MakeMyTrip for engaging in unfair trade practices that mislead and disadvantage consumers, particularly in relation to their gift card program. The details of the issue are outlined below:
1. Sale and Use of Gift Cards: MakeMyTrip sells gift cards through various channels, which customers purchase by paying the full face value upfront. These cards are typically valid for one year and are marketed as a convenient alternative to cash for booking hotels, flights, and other travel services.
2. Discriminatory Pricing Practices: Despite customers paying the full amount in advance, MakeMyTrip does not treat gift cards as equivalent to cash. During the booking process, the company offers discounts for payments made via UPI, debit cards, or credit cards—but not for payments made using gift cards. This discriminatory practice is unfair, especially considering that gift card holders have already provided the company with advance payment.
3. Inability to Utilize Gift Cards Fully: Due to the lack of discounts and incentives for gift card users, many customers are discouraged from using them. As a result, the cards often remain unused or partially used within the validity period.
4. Forfeiture of Unused Balances: Once the validity period expires, MakeMyTrip forfeits the remaining balance on the gift cards, effectively impounding funds that were paid in good faith. This practice amounts to unjust enrichment and is tantamount to cheating.
5. Comparison with Industry Standards: Other companies such as Amazon and BigBasket do not impose such discriminatory conditions on gift card usage. They treat gift cards as equivalent to cash and do not penalize customers for using them.
6. Recently they forfeited my gift card of Rs. 5500/- and not responded for emails.
I kindly request your office to investigate this matter and take appropriate action against MakeMyTrip and refund my money. I look forward to your support.
